Pysanky Eggs

Eggs, vessels of life.  Like fancies of a latter-day Fabergé, each of Cecily’s pysanky eggs is a living world in miniature.  Each unique.  Lyrical, geometrical, natural, fantastical … personal.

She begins with an intricate design drawn directly on the surface of a hollowed-out, hand-blown egg (domesticated ostrich, rhea or emu).  Then, utilizing the “wax-resist” or batik method originated in Ukraine a thousand years ago, Cecily repeatedly applies beeswax and rich dyes to bring the design to life.  Pure magic.
